I love my job! It really means just so much to me that I get to be witness to such a special season in someone else's life. Better than just being a witness to the start of a couple's life together or their engagement season is that we get to preserve that time for them. We take photos that they can look at when they're further down their road together and remember life now: how happy they were, how much fun they were having, possibly how carefree life might've been when the photo was taken, really anything. Photos are, at their most basic, a touchstone; a reminder of another time and place. It doesn't happen often but occasionally we take a set of photos that serves as a touchstone for me too. Sometimes I'll look at a photo that Aleah or I took of a couple and it will remind me of a time in our lives, or in the case of Kaley and Matthew's photos it reminds me of our own engagement photos.
Both sets of photos were taken outdoors in the fall, and we also wore jeans but really that's where the similarities end. Honestly the photos don't really look that much alike. I think what makes the photos speaks to me so much is that within minutes of talking to Matthew and Kaley it was pretty apparent that our relationships have some similarities. As we were chatting and getting to know them the first time we sat down together they started telling us about the long drives they used to take and how they used to just hang out in the car. That was totally Aleah and I when we were dating. (I am trying really really hard not to go off on a long tangent and tell a story about a particularly memorable drive that Aleah and I took when we were dating. As I just typed that last sentence though I realized that it'll make it's own great blog post. Perhaps I'll swing back around to that later.) It kinda goes without saying at this point but I'll say it anyway that we loved hanging out with Matthew and Kaley and CANNOT wait for their big day next year!
